The Australasian PASS Alliance (APA)

The Australasian PASS Alliance (APA) is the peak body supporting excellence in PASS and peer learning across Australasia. We provide accredited training, professional leadership, and a collaborative community of practice to strengthen student success outcomes across higher education.

The APA was formed in June 2024 to support the ongoing professional development and training requirements of the PASS and Peer Learning community in the Australasia region. It comprises multiple internationally Accredited Certified Trainers with more than 100 years of collective practice-based PASS expertise and PASS research.

The distributed leadership model used by the APA allows a network of State and Regional Convenors and Committees to support the efforts of the Certified Trainers in offering online and face-to-face community catch ups, Accredited PASS Supervisor and Advanced PASS Supervisor trainings, National PASS & Peer Learning Leader Awards and the PASS & Peer Learning Conference.

The APA is the authorised representative in this region for the International Centre for Supplemental Instruction/PASS, which is based at the University of Missouri, Kansas City (UMKC) in the USA.
Why we exist

Mission Statement

The Australasian PASS Alliance exists to advance student learning, success and sense of belonging in higher education through evidence-based peer learning. Our aim is to disseminate the Supplemental Instruction (SI)/ Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS)/ Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) model and support the development of SI/PASS/PAL programs within the Australasian region. We support institutions, educators, and student leaders to design, deliver, and sustain high-quality peer learning programs that are inclusive, ethical, and grounded in educational research.

What we do

Our Purpose

The purpose of the Australasian PASS Alliance is to provide leadership, stewardship, and quality assurance for PASS and peer learning practices across Australasia. The Alliance acts as the peak body in the region that provides accredited training and promotes shared standards, professional development, collaboration, and continuous quality improvement in PASS. Through this work, the Alliance contributes to improved student engagement, retention, transition, and academic success, particularly for students in Higher Education.

Sally brings more than 25 years of PASS and peer learning expertise to the APA. She is the winner of multiple institutional, national and international awards for Excellence and Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning.

Honorary Director

Fiona is a well-known and highly respected figure within the PASS community, having led an award-winning PASS program at Griffith University for over 13 years.

Raphael Pereira

Honorary Director

Raphael’s national leadership in peer learning is underpinned by 19 years’ experience in student learning and support. He has established two award-winning PASS programs and has a particular focus on enhancing student equity in higher education.
